Baralaba

Location

The Baralaba Mine is located in Central Queensland about 150 km west of Gladstone and 50 km north of Moura.

Ownership

The Baralaba Mine and its associated assets are owned by Baralaba Coal Pty. Ltd., which is owned by JFE Shoji Trade Corporation (37.5%) and Cockatoo Coal Limited (62.5%).

Operation Summary

The Baralaba Mine is an open cut operation which currently produces at the rate of 0.6 Mtpa and has a capacity of around 1 Mtpa of saleable coal. The ROM coal is crushed and screened and sold on an unwashed basis. There are two products; low volatile PCI (pulverised coal injection) coal and thermal coal. The product split is approximately 70% and 30% respectively. The product coal is transported a distance of 55 km by road trains to a dedicated rail load-out facility. The coal is then railed a distance of 180 km to the Gladstone Port where it is stockpiled and then loaded into ships for export. The main destinations for Baralaba's coal are Japan, Korea and China. The first shipment occurred in April 2006.

Geology

The Baralaba Mine deposit lies on the eastern flank of the Mimosa Syncline and strikes to the north-northwest. It includes the crops of the Rangal/Upper Baralaba Coal Measures, a unit of the Blackwater Group.

The deposit contains semi-anthracitic coal from the Rangal/Baralaba Coal Measures.  43 seam splits have been identified of which 13 are currently mined.
